AAAYYY, WHOA.. I'M BLOGGIN' HERE !! ( New York 2011 - part one )

In all my past travels throughout life, I've learned that I like big cities... and if you like big cities then New York is THE place to be ,' faw faw faw'. It's all really very 'well-to-do'..... but seriously - I was staying in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn with a brief prelude for 3 days in a Newark, New Jersey warehouse at the end of September this year. I should pretty much be a rapper now. Below is a recap of the trip with a few of the many photos I shot on the G9. Skinny Pete loaned me his old Nikon as well, and I shot some film that I'll post a few highlights from later if I didn't blow it.

On the evening of September 16th, 2011 I flew into Newark airport and was promptly scooped up by my friend Dan, whom I had met last year in Arizona while we were both visiting. An amazing human all around, Dan was kind enough to take me into his home(warehouse) and show me around New Jersey for a few days before I headed into New York to stay with another friend. Dan's roomate Andrew is a solid homie who was also on the AZ trip, and they both skate like beasts. Newark is nuts. Pretty raw. But I had an awesome time anyway between BBQs, skating, crazy New Jersey driving, and getting partied with the locals.

The warehouse spot Dan and his friends have is pretty wild too, filled to the brim with all sorts of crazy stuff to root through. The 1st thing I saw was an old, pre-vinyl record (above) from the late 1800s.... heavy metal Dixie. Among other things were a massive VHS collection, a piano, guitars and a banjo, and a multi-game arcade console (below). Miss Pacman got the most use.

On my 2nd night in town there was a big party in the warehouse space right next to ours, with bands and a crazy rap-off that got the night going. There was a quarter pipe in there that got hit up amongst the madness, and Andrew really let loose with the moves on the floor - dancing the night away and providing one of my favorite photos of the trip(below).

Food and beer were so cheap at the bodegas in Jersey that we were never short of supplies for loading dock chill outs. You could get a mega tall can of Blue for 99 cents ! WHAT ?! It was so easy to feel like a philanthropist for like, 6 bucks. The massive chicken breast I bought was 3 dollars and made enough fillets for 7 burgers.... we ate good on the cheap.

When we weren't at the warehouse living life to the Newark-est, we were on a mission to tour guide me through some of Jersey's best skate spots. Right downtown in Newark are perfect granite ledges that go for a whole block (below), that got sampled by Dan and I as someone's chain got snatched across the street. "Shorts 4 life" Dan back tee'd it like BUTR (below, look closer)

There's apparently only one concrete skatepark anywhere close to Newark, and it's in Sayerville, which is who knows where. What I do know is there was a major festival of some sort going on in the city park the skatepark is located in, so it was a madhouse. The park had an awkward street course, and an interesting bowl. I took only one roll through before deciding the crowd was too much for me, but Dan and Andrew killed it easily. There were so many people around that they kept wandering into the shot every time I tried to shoot a photo of Drew slashing the over-vert capsule, which ended up awarding him yet another hilarious pic (below). Ladies Man !

We also hit up a sick ghetto spot in Jersey city that the boys had some part in creating (below), with lots of ledges and bumps/volcanoes. The bank with the curb on it in the background of the photo was amazing. Dan got a sick clip for an eventual G9 video, and Drew snapped a shot of me bluntsliding one of the ledges (below).

After a few solid days of exploring Jersey with the crew, another one of the Arizona vacation bros showed up in town, none other than Mr Willy Akers (below). His arrival coincided with my departure to Brooklyn, so we decided to meet up in Manhattan the next day for a skate. Before leaving for the city the next morning I went up to the roof of the warehouse to see what the view was like.....

The Derms-mobile picked me up on 5 minutes notice for a trip to Queensboro park today, packed with a solid crew and heading optimistically into some evil looking clouds. Even though it drizzled on us the whole way there, the ground dried up and the sun came out to welcome me to my first session at an amazing new park. We hit up Ladner's new bowl on the way home as well to cap off a great Sunday afternoon. Can't wait to go back to these parks soon..... DTZ

HYPE EXTENDER / ARIZONA 2011

Every year around mid-winter I head to Arizona to visit my parents, and skate in the sun as much as possible. Flights are ridiculously cheap, and ditches abound once you set foot in the desert. Normally, I take a few friends along to share in the radness, but this year everyone was unable due to various circumstances. A sad notion, when compared to last year's super crew consisting of Jett Falconwing, Bunt Prestington, T-Nice, Frank the Tank..... and yours truly.

I was fortunate enough to have Tucson loc Mr. Aaron Suski hooking me up with sessions, not to mention hella hella healthy health drinks that probably saved my life or something. His homie Willy Akers came out from the east coast with some friends while I was there, we went to a million spots, I shot a lot of photos. Joe Hammeke was our generous host in Phoenix when we all ventured there for a few days..... lots got crammed into a short amount of time - including a broken arm from me - but it was a blast hanging in the sun with a big crew, skating new spots, and getting to spend time with my family as well. Below are some photo highlights from the trip, with captions to fill in the many blanks.....

I went to the Pima Air and Space Museum with my folks to check out some planes and helicopters from various eras that are on display in several hangars, while outside there are literally thousands more sitting in the desert that have been retired to the " Airplane Graveyard ". That's my mom standing next to some sort of bumble bee looking thing that actually flies.

On the 1st day that the east coasters got to town we ended up skating 2 ditches, 2 pools, and a skatepark. Willy's friends Dan, Mark and Andrew were either skating the spot with him, or capturing it in epic Flip-Phone-HD awesomeness for an upcoming mega-release of unknown proportions. Much props go out to Suski's friend Jesse who has an amazing bowl in his yard, among so much else....including a spine mini ramp, super double hybrid bus-home-chill thing, and a yard that's being made completely skateable. He made us a great dinner one evening, and welcomed us into his amazing home with open arms.

Below: I thought I heard the Jersey guys calling Dan " Bag-a-D's " when I first met them, but they weren't and I ended up unintentionally giving him a nickname that kinda sucks. Sorry about that Dan. Ol' Bag-a-D's liked to have a lil' nappy time pretty much everywhere we went, but don't let that mislead you, he's hiding some crazy flatground tech under that " sleeping hessian " exterior.

Above: Mark is also from New Jersey... I think. He lives somewhere in Washington State now. They must have gnarly pools and parks there because Mark knows how to fly around a bowl like nobody's business. This back smith was absolutely amazing. It made me feel like a small, scared child.

Below: Willy is full of good energy at all times. He deserves to be an amazing skateboarder, and he is. I got a lot of great photos of him on the trip, it was hard to choose just a couple to showcase here. He killed this pool, starting each run with these stylish frontside bargers.

Above: Jesse's dogs constantly run around the bowl while people skate, often charging in and out mid-run, which is awesome but kinda really sketchy. So far the dogs seem un-killed.

Below: Aaron is not scared of a pool. He will remind you ( or ME, in this case ) via his skating that you are no more than a frail old man, incapable of such displays of awesomeness in an empty basin. Watch him safely from the sidelines and be happy that Aaron is one of the nicest guys on earth. Big tucked frontside at Jesse's.

Above and Below: I stopped by this long-since out of business hotel, The Picacho Hotel, after noticing it while driving from Tucson to Phoenix on previous trips. As I started shooting photos the current owner came out of the small building next door to tell me about it. He was quite friendly, and even gave me a vintage postcard of the Hotel from it's heyday. It's slated to be torn down soon for the expansion of the highway, so I'm glad I finally went there.

Above: While in Phoenix we met up with Nick Terrell ( hope I'm spelling it right ), a friend of the Jersey guys who's living in Tempe for a while. Some ex- Anti Hero guys started a company called Hardtimes and they hook Nick up so that he can maintain his ripping everything in sight style. These banks he's skating are harder to skate than they look, but they're fun as hell. I broke my arm skating flatground minutes before he pulled this backside noseblunt revert.

Below: Birdhouse rip-ling Sean Gregoire was riding his Harley across the country from D.C. and decided to crash with Hammeke for a bit in Tempe, so he linked up with us for a couple days. He's a mellow cat that seems to be able to skate anything. This bluntslide was done in one end of a ditch that might as well have been a skatepark.

Below: The bulk of our crew. This was my last day skating in Arizona...really just hanging out taking photos due to the busted arm, which I did not know was busted yet. Whatever. I'm used to this after 25 years of skateboarding.

I love Arizona. I plan to keep visiting every winter as an escape from the cold and a chance to experience what desert life has to offer. I can't even properly convey how it feels to have endless amounts of bust-free concrete ditches to explore, when skating somewhere other than a skatepark is getting harder and harder almost everywhere. A huge thanks goes out to my family, Suskibeatz, Hammeke, the Jersey guys, Nick terrell and everyone else who showed me a great time while I was in town. Deeter and Kreep got to check out King Khan and BBQ ( Mark Sultan ) in Vancouver this past Monday ..... and as usual the G9 came along. I shot a ton of photos, but I personally like the colorful blurry pictures taken on the manual adjustment settings. The boys rocked it like no others , it was a great night !

About a year ago I bought a Canon G9, just before they released the G10. I got a great deal, and I love the lil' sucker. It takes amazing photos, and the video quality ain't the worst either. Pretty much all the photos you see on this blog are taken by the G9. Here's a short clip of Buddy P and the Gypper as captured by it's lense...

....Callahan is a Vancouver based band that has been logging a lot of tour hours recently. Lead singer Chris Stiles had seen some Red Tel artwork and asked me ( AC ) if I could draw up an idea the band had , in a classic psych style. Unfortunately, the only way you can get your hands on one of these limited tank tops is to go see the band - for now. Xray Camp is a music project I've had in the works for quite some time now , but with the departure of OG member Jon Stuge ( to OZ...remember ? ) there is a void that needs to be filled..... or a couple voids actually. What we need is a bass player , and another guitar guy too.

Here's the lowdown on the Camp's steez - We are very influenced by OLD MUSIC ... especially psych rock , heavy blues , soul ..... Bands ? - The 13th Floor Elevators , MC5 , Buddy Guy , Sabbath , The Yardbirds , Wire , Wipers , Thin Lizzy ....and on and on.

On Saturday , March 28th , Alex Stursberg and myself hosted a collage party here in Strathcona. Lot's of good friends came out to add their own personal touches to the evening's creations , and a great time was had by all. The photo above is my own contribution. Judi Tedlie and Anna McClellan served up the snacks , including homemade strawberry shortcake and a large variety of potato chip goodness. Red Telephone Strathcona Session !!

...with the Strathcona skatepark across the street from the Red Tel studio , it's easy to get sidetracked from work for a session with friends. On this particular day , AC ran into his good friends Jon "X-TM" Sturge and Bud " ATM " Patterson while walking the ever-popular Gypsy by the skatepark. Poor pooch was so excited to see Jon that she ran right in the path of one of his trick attempts and had a little collision. Pretty sure she won't be running into the park again any time soon. She's all good though , tough as nails that one.

1992 Fashion Flashback !

....just look at those things ! It's hard to believe super baggy jeans were the standard for a couple years in the early nineties..... they seem sooooo ridiculous now. The pair in the photo was my own pair , from by own brand - Droopies. Ha ha..... I know. But I sold a good deal of clothing because of that trend , as short lived as it may have been. From 92' till 95' I made jeans , cords , twills , shorts , tees , jackets , snowboard pants , hats , wallets and a few other random things... mostly under the Droopies name. From about 97' till 2005 I was on a hiatus from clothing design until I decided to start sewing again while on a trip to Nova Scotia , and The Red Telephone Design Company was born. Big Pants- Small Wheels for sure ! ....ahhhh , the good ol' days. - ac.

Alphonse Mucha's art has been another influence here at The Red Telephone , the above images are a few highlights of his work. When I was young my family had a large poster-size version of the " Bieres de la Meuse " in the living room , not sure whatever happened to it.

...on the news side of things...... AC broke his foot , so the Red-Tel promo video will be out slightly later than expected.....let's hope for late April ! The cameo-bro list is tight ! Hype this piece my domies !!!!!!

Who Is "Don" ?

...Don , whose image appears on a few Red Telephone creations , is jazzy ol' musician Donald Byrd.... a trumpet player I believe. There was a photo of him on the back of his " Electric Byrd " album that I liked , so I did my own rendition of it ..... and now his mug is all up on my clothes piece. A standout track on that album is " The Dude " , and from the photo , Donald appears to be a genuine Dude. Don was the 1st in the Red Telephone "Wax" series , featuring musicians whose music has influenced the direction of Red Tel. Keep posted for more icons in the Wax series soon !!!!

My good friend Dan " The Danager " Darling , the darling that he is , hooked me up with an O.G. set of Powell Mini Rat wheels earlier this year. I had a pair the same color in 1990 ! These ones are in great condition , and I gave them a few rolls before retiring them to the shelf of nostalgia. As a thanks , I gave Dan a custom slim-fit Red Tel Stripe Tee ( above ) . Dan likes to sing , you can catch his act at Ultimate Distribution in Richmond , Monday to Friday , 9-5.

I got this deck a while back in the summer , and skated it , though I would have loved to mount it on the wall. It was an amazing board - I'm a big fan of Deluxe wood. This whole series of Girl/Anti Hero crossover graphics is great.... and the Girl boards that look like A.H. decks are tight as well. Support these guys - they rule !

I have so many photos on the G9 from the Tucson/Phoenix trip that I decided to post a few more favorites. From the top - Tula Faye , the family dog ..... also dubbed Tina Fey by my roomate / The epic Phoenix ditch spot / A napping Ocelot / Javelinas in the front yard / The surprisingly friendly Humming birds that hang out with my mom / Another beautiful sunset / Rainbow in the desert ...... it actually rained for 3 of the days we were there - very uncommon for Tucson. Enjoy !

Reverberations

....so I was fortunate enough to get to see Roky Erickson play in Seattle earlier this year , backed by the talented Black Angels. My Canon G9 came along as always for shuttery goodness, and I walked away with alot of great images. Roky , and his 60's group The 13th Floor Elevators , has been a big influence on my own musical development. It was great to finally see him in person , he seemed to be having a grand ol' time !

Below are 2 photos , one of the sign outside the venue , and one I named " the look ". Roky has endured alot of hardship related to his mental health , which has taken it's toll on his memory and , unfortunately , musical ability. To be his backing band would be no small task - you have to pay close attention to what Roky is playing , and help him back on track if need be. The look on the Black Angels' guitarist's face says it all. That being said , Roky still blasted out some bangers ..... and there was wicked psychedelic merch to be bought ! We definitely ate way too much Jack In The Box on that trip , but Seattle roadtrips are a blast and we got to see a living legend. " ....my eye turns to the left to say no , " - from " Bloody Hammer ", Roky Erickson and the Aliens , The Evil One.

Welcome to the 1st official web-home of The Red Telephone Design Company ! Specializing in custom fit clothing , Red Tel is focused on producing limited , high quality goods. The brand was created by Vancouver , B.C.'s Adam Cassidy , in 2006 with influences drawn from old music , art and a desire to make something that isn't mass produced. Although not entirely opposed to larger production runs , Red Tel places more attention on releasing "one-off" creations that have their own unique identity. Currently , Mens jeans and pants , tees , collar zips and toques are available for custom orders. A whole lotta new things are in the works for this spring , so keep checking back ! In the meantime , go listen to " Today " , by Jefferson Airplane ..... it's a great song.
